North Carolina Coach Plays Craps
About a week ago we reported that Ty Lawson, a player for the North Carolina college basketball team, had visiting the local casino in Detroit to gamble. Lawson had played at the craps table and won about $250. The NCAA was not too happy about Lawson gambling as they frown upon any connection with basketball players and gambling. Now we have found out that Roy Williams, the coach for North Carolina, was at the casino as well. Lawson felt as though the media blew the story out of proportion especially since he is of legal age to gamble. Williams was at the casino gambling as well and he commented: "It's strange, if we don't want those kids doing it, don't put the Final Four in a city where the casino is 500 yards from our front door. And they've got a great buffet in there. I mean, come on.''
The NCAA disproves of gambling but did state that Lawson did nothing wrong, although they would rather the players did not visit the casinos. Willliams commented that he met Lawson and Marc Campbell before they left the casino and told them to contact him if they felt like they might be doing something ‘questionable’.
Williams then visited the casino out of superstition. In previous games, Williams has played at casinos and lost money. This apparently was good luck because the team won the games they played after Willliams lost his money. Apparently Williams bad luck is good luck because the Tar Heels won the Championships after beating Michigan State 89 to 72.
